Why mixed age group? Studies have shown preschool children benefit from being in mixed age classes. The older children help the younger students learn certain social behaviours and skills and strive to emulate what they see. Also, older ones learn compassion, leadership and caring for younger children.
Why home based preschool? There are many advantages to home based preschool and a trend is starting in the industry.
- Home schools have a less institutionalized feel and are an extension of the child's own home that they can go to independently.
- Fewer illnesses as the child is exposed to fewer children.
- Generally lower tuition than larger centres.
- More flexibility than larger centres who will likely charge you a fee if you pick your child up late.
- Open communication and accessibility to your child's teacher at any time.
- Less teacher burnout which obviously benefits your child. Teachers in preschools with a 1:12 ratio or even 2:24 are not able to have as much one on one time with their students.
- More accidents may occur in larger centres as less supervision is available.
I'm nervous about my child being in a small centre will this really prepare them for kindergarten?
- My classroom is the same size as the the last school I taught at but also has natural sunlight and outdoor space.
- We have a balance between play and academics, weekly themes and curriculum to follow. It is also more flexible if the children want to study something else in an emergent curriculum setting.
- Children adapt to a larger centre in kindergarten. Perhaps more so as they are building their self esteem, confidence and the skills they need during their time at preschool.
